How many Malaysian electrical contractors actually have a working website?

We sampled 400 ST-registered contractors at random and went looking for their websites. Fewer than one in twelve had one doing real commercial work — and on the sites that do exist, the weakest dimension is not design or polish. It is project proof: showing the jobs they have already delivered.

A random sample, not a sales anecdote.

"Most contractor websites are missing or weak" gets repeated in this industry without evidence. So we measured it. We took the public Suruhanjaya Tenaga contractor listing, drew a random sample of 400 companies, and went looking for every website we could find — twice, with two different search approaches. Then we inspected all 77 live sites we found and scored each one on five things a customer actually cares about — 385 individual scores. The whole thing took about a month. The second pass alone surfaced 14 sites the first one missed, which is exactly why one pass is not enough. Every company was assessed against the same rubric under the same conditions, so no site is flattered or penalised by when we happened to look at it. “Relevant” means the site actually sells the contractor’s electrical or energy work; “usable” means no dead entry point, obsolete technology, or major access failure.

Look at the last bar. Out of 400 randomly chosen registered contractors, 31 had a website doing real commercial work for them.

Fewer than 1 in 12 ST-registered contractors has a strong website. And 8 in 10 have none we could find at all. If you are a contractor with even a modest, honest, working site, you are ahead of roughly 92% of your register.

One caveat we insist on carrying: "no website found" means no site surfaced after two serious search passes — it is not proof a site does not exist. But note what that distinction is worth commercially: if two deliberate searches cannot find your website, neither can a customer.

Having a website is not the same as having a good one.

The 77 sites we found split into four tiers. Each was scored out of 100 across five dimensions — availability, relevance, trust evidence, project proof, and conversion path. These are customer-facing evidence scores from direct inspection, not design grades or laboratory performance tests.

The largest tier is not the strong one. It is the middle: companies that already paid for a website once, and got something that neither embarrasses nor sells. And the degraded tier shows what happens after the invoice is paid and nobody owns the site — it quietly times out, ages, or breaks, usually without the owner noticing.

The weakest link everywhere: project proof.

Across all 77 sites, the five scored dimensions averaged like this (out of 20): sites are mostly reachable (18.6) and mostly relevant (17.5), moderately credible (13.1) with a moderate enquiry path (13.1) — but project proof averaged just 10.1 out of 20, the lowest score of the five by a wide margin.

In plain terms: most contractor websites describe services, but do not show work. No named projects, no photos of completed jobs, no client context, nothing a customer can verify. Which is striking, because a contractor's most persuasive asset — finished, photographed, real work — is the one thing every contractor already has.

What the strong 31 do differently.

The strong tier ranged from national groups to ordinary contractor-scale firms — companies like Nada Setia, Brownfield Engineering, KTL Electrical, AE Setia, and Sungai Manal Indah Engineering show this does not require a corporate budget. Five practices repeated across almost all of them:

Availability: a maintained site

Current-year content, working links, valid certificates. In a market where abandonment is normal, simply being visibly alive is a competitive signal.

Relevance: a specific technical scope

They say exactly what they design, install, test, commission, or maintain — not "all kinds of electrical works".

Trust evidence: credentials made visible

ST and CIDB registrations, competent persons, ISO status, and years of operation shown plainly — the trust currency of this trade, not wallpaper.

Project proof: the jobs, shown

Projects, sites, named clients, systems installed. Evidence a customer can check beats any adjective — and this is where most sites are weakest.

Conversion path: one obvious next step

Phone, WhatsApp, a short enquiry form, operating hours, service area. The customer never has to work out how to buy.

What this means if you are a contractor.

Honestly: it depends on where your work comes from. If your order book is full from repeat clients and referrals, a website may genuinely not be your bottleneck — and anyone who insists otherwise is selling, not advising.

But if you lose work you never hear about — the facility manager who searched your company name before shortlisting, the consultant checking whether you are real — the bar this study reveals is remarkably low. You do not need to out-design anyone. A findable site that says specifically what you do, shows real completed work with your registrations visible, and puts WhatsApp one tap away already clears roughly 92% of the register.

The harder question this study keeps pointing at is not the build — it is the years after. The degraded tier and the abandoned middle are what websites become when nobody is responsible for them. Whoever builds your site, settle that question first: who keeps it alive, current, and yours?

Two separate search passes per company, including simplified-name searches. "No site found" is a search-negative result, not proof of non-existence.

Every live site inspected directly in July 2026 and scored across availability, relevance, trust evidence, project proof, and conversion path. Site conditions are dated observations — a site down when we looked may be up today.

What we did not test

No performance lab work, accessibility audit, security testing, or legal review — and we contacted no company. Scores measure customer-facing evidence, nothing more.
