Thermal-camera training versus thermography certification: which does your team need?

When a company decides its team needs thermography training, it is usually deciding between two products without knowing it. One is a credential: a formal, examined certification that makes someone a thermographer on paper. The other is a capability: practical training that makes a maintenance team useful with a camera. They cost different amounts, take different time, and answer different needs — and buying the wrong one wastes most of the money either way.

The confusion is understandable, because both products can be described with the same sentence — "thermography training for our team" — and some providers are happy to leave the ambiguity in place. So it is worth being concrete about what each one actually is.

The certification pathway.

Professional thermography certification — Level 1, then upward — is a formal credential: a structured course of study with an examination, run by dedicated certification bodies, tied to recognised standards for infrared measurement and reporting. It exists to answer one question with authority: is this person qualified to conduct thermographic surveys and author the findings? That authority is exactly what a formal survey report needs behind it — it is why insurers commonly ask for the credential by name, and why the person signing a survey your auditor will rely on should hold it. It costs accordingly: days of study per person, an exam, renewal obligations, and fees to match — all justified when the credential is doing credential work.

The practical capability.

Practical camera training answers a different question: can our own people use a thermal camera usefully and safely as part of maintenance work? Its natural audience is chargemen, technicians and supervisors; its natural content is the six Monday-after outcomes — camera setup, safe scanning, fair comparison, fault signatures, recording, escalation; and its natural role is the months between professional surveys, when a facility with a camera and a trained team catches developing faults that a facility without one simply waits to discover. It is cheaper and faster per person because it is not carrying the weight of report authorship — and it produces a certificate of attendance, not a professional credential, which any honest provider will say out loud.

One question decides it.

Who signs the reports? If the answer is "our person" — if someone internal must author formal survey findings that clients, insurers or auditors rely on — that person needs the certification pathway, and nothing less is honest. If the answer is "an external provider signs the formal surveys, our team scans between them" — then what your team needs is capability, and paying certification prices for six technicians who will never author a report buys prestige, not maintenance value. Most facilities that think it through land on the mixed shape: one credential where the authority lives, practical capability across the team — with a clear line between what stays in-house and what gets brought in.

We sell the practical side: two-day thermography and partial discharge courses built around field practice, certificates of attendance stated as exactly that. We do not offer Level 1/2 certification, we do not describe our courses as a pathway to it, and when the fit check concludes that a credential — or no training at all — is what your situation actually needs, that conclusion is the deliverable. A training provider you can trust is one who will tell you when the thing they sell is the wrong purchase.
