Thermography training for maintenance teams: what should people be able to do afterwards?

Training is one of the few purchases judged by how the day felt instead of what changed afterwards. So here is a sharper test for any thermography course, ours included: on the Monday after, standing in front of a live panel with the camera in hand — what exactly can your technician now do that they could not do before? If the course outline cannot answer that in verbs, it is a day out, not an upskilling.

A thermal camera is easy to switch on and easy to misuse — it will produce a colourful, confident-looking image regardless of whether the person holding it has done anything right. That gap between producing an image and producing a reading someone can act on is the entire syllabus of a good practical course. Here is that gap, written as the six outcomes worth paying for.

Set the camera up so the numbers mean something

Focus, temperature range, distance, and a working grasp of emissivity — why a shiny busbar lies to the camera and a piece of tape tells the truth. Wrong setup produces plausible nonsense, which is worse than no reading.

Scan a live panel inside safe boundaries

What may be scanned, from where, with which covers, under whose authorisation — and what is never touched. The camera changes nothing about electrical safety rules; the course must put the boundaries in before the confidence.

Make a fair comparison

The discipline that separates readings from guesses: same component, neighbouring phase, similar load. An absolute temperature is trivia; the difference against a fair reference is the finding.

Recognise the common signatures

Point-heat at a termination, whole-path warmth, one warm phase, the cold anomaly — the shapes that name the cause — because the shape decides whether the fix is a spanner, a load plan, or an escalation.

Record a finding someone else can act on

Thermal image plus visual photo, the load at the time, the exact location. A finding that lives only in the technician's memory does not exist by the following week.

Escalate on the right threshold

The judgement outcome: what gets watched, what gets reported today, what stops the walk-through and gets a phone call. Reading the image is half the skill; knowing when it is no longer your call is the other half.

What two days does not make anyone.

Now the boundary, stated the way we would want it stated to us. A practical course does not produce a certified thermographer — that is a formal, examined credential pathway with its own study hours and field requirements, and no two-day programme honestly substitutes for it. It does not qualify anyone to author the formal survey reports an insurer or auditor relies on. And it does not replace the professional inspection cycle — it makes the time between those inspections observed instead of blind, which is where its value genuinely lives. We issue certificates of attendance and say so; if what your situation actually needs is the certification, that is a different purchase, and a fit check should tell you so before a course is sold to you.

How to read any provider's outline — including ours.

Take the course outline and strike out every line that names a topic rather than an ability — "introduction to infrared theory" tells you what will be said, not what anyone will be able to do. What survives should look like the six outcomes above, and the day should be weighted accordingly: mostly guided practice on real or realistic equipment, with participants' own mistakes corrected in the room, and a closing handover — the routine, the limits, the escalation path — the team takes back to work. Whether any of it survives the month after is a separate discipline, and it belongs in the plan before the course is booked, not after it fades.
