Do you really need thermography training if you already own the camera?

Here is the sentence heard in maintenance rooms everywhere: "It's just a camera — point and shoot." And the camera agrees with you. Whatever you do, it produces a crisp image and a confident number, which feels like competence achieved. That is precisely the problem — and it is why the training question deserves a more honest answer than either "of course not" or a sales pitch.

Start with why the belief is so reasonable. Thermal cameras became cheap, and their makers — sensibly — designed them to feel effortless: auto-focus, auto-scaling, a palette that makes everything look decisive, a temperature in the corner of every frame. Compare that to a multimeter, which punishes a wrong setup with no reading at all. A thermal camera punishes nothing. Set the wrong emissivity, scan at the wrong time, stand too far away — it still rewards you with a beautiful image and a number to two decimal places. It is the most confident instrument in the toolbox: it never says "I don't know."

So "point and shoot" isn't lazy thinking. It is exactly what the instrument teaches its owner. The trouble is what it quietly doesn't teach.

The five errors you cannot see on the screen.

The surface lies, and the image doesn't say so

Shiny busbar and bright metal reflect their surroundings instead of reporting their own temperature — a reflection of the ceiling lights reads as a plausible hotspot, and nothing on screen flags it. Emissivity is the first thing training fixes and the last thing point-and-shoot discovers.

A number with no reference is trivia

Is 52°C alarming? Against the neighbouring phase at 38°C, very. On a fully loaded circuit whose siblings read 50°C, no. The finding is the difference, never the number — and the untrained eye reads the number.

No load, no findings — and a clean report anyway

Fault heat rises with the square of the current, so a quiet-shift scan produces a confident all-clear about a sleeping system. The false clean is the most expensive image a camera can make, because it justifies doing nothing.

Distance quietly shrinks every fault

A small terminal scanned from across the room under-fills the measurement spot and averages in its cool surroundings — the reading comes out low, the image still looks sharp. Spot-size discipline is invisible until someone teaches it.

An unrecorded finding doesn't exist

No load noted, no reference stated, no location label — a camera roll of orphaned rainbow images that nobody can act on, verify, or defend later. The record discipline is half the skill and none of the marketing.

Notice what these five have in common: on the display, the wrong version looks identical to the right version. That is why experience alone doesn't cure them — errors that produce no feedback don't teach. It is also why the confidence of an untrained camera owner is real and sincere. The instrument has been agreeing with them for years.

The asymmetry that makes it matter.

If untrained scanning merely produced no value, it would be a wasted gadget and nobody's problem. The actual risk is negative value. A false-clean scan becomes the reason the proper survey gets skipped this year. A reflection chased as a hotspot spends real repair money on nothing, and teaches the team to distrust the method. A mislabelled severity sits in the file, in writing, until the day an incident investigation reads it back. A wrong reading filed with confidence is worse than no reading at all — no reading at least knows it needs help.

We watched this logic play out at national scale once. When we commissioned a fever-screening station at the Johor Bahru CIQ checkpoint, operator training was a contractual line item — nobody hands a thermal system to a government agency and calls the hardware the capability. The camera pointed itself; the operators were trained to know what its numbers could and could not claim. A switchroom deserves the same respect a border hall got.

Don't take our word for it.

The standards bodies reached the same conclusion, in writing. NFPA 70B — the electrical maintenance standard, the same one behind the annual inspection default — does not just call for thermography; it expects it performed by qualified personnel using calibrated instruments, with findings documented to a stated severity logic. And the ISO catalogue contains an entire standard, ISO 18436-7, that exists for one purpose only: grading thermography personnel for condition monitoring into three competence categories, by examination. Read that back slowly — the international standards system looked at this method and decided the person holding the camera is a certified component of the measurement chain, the same as the lens. Neither document is Malaysian law, and we will never pretend otherwise — but when the belief in the maintenance room is "no training needed" and the world's standards bodies wrote personnel qualification into the method itself, one of the two is wrong about thermography, and it is not the standards bodies.

Who genuinely doesn't need training.

Honesty both ways, because "everyone must train" is just a sales pitch wearing safety colours. If nobody in your team holds a camera and nobody will, you don't need a course — you need a survey done properly, on a sensible cadence, by people who do this daily. If your team scans but nothing ever happens with the findings, the gap is process, not skill, and a course won't fix it. And if the honest scanning volume is once or twice a year, the arithmetic often favours buying the survey and skipping the camera ownership entirely.

That sorting — train, route to a different fix, or pause — is precisely what our fit check exists to do before any course is quoted, and it concludes "training is not the gap" often enough to keep us honest. What training buys, when it is the right fix, is specific Monday-after abilities, on your own boards, with the limits stated plainly. What it never buys is the thing the camera has been whispering all along: that competence came in the box.
